9/2/18 Report - Finding Silver Among World Coins Using a Magnet. Hidden Medieval Doorway Under Castle Found. Tropical Storm Seven.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com.

Silver 1941 Netherlands Quarter /

Do you know how many silver coins you've found?  I didn't.

If you metal detect around Florida resort areas very much you'll find coins from all over the world.  I had a accumulated quite a few and didn't know much about them, so a few weeks ago I asked my readers if anyone had any good ideas what to do with miscellaneous world coins.

The first thing I decided to do was take a better look at them.  One step in the process was to run a magnet over groups of coins.  That will give you information about what they are made of.   It can be a good thing to do when you are looking for silver coins.

Some coins, including a lot of Canadian nickels and quarters will stick to the magnet.  The silver ones won't though.  That is one quick way to scan for silver coins.

As another example, running a magnet over a bunch of pennies, will help you find the steel war pennies, which will stick to the magnet.  But I want to talk about foreign coins now.

Just the other day I was looking through some Canadian coins.  You can find a lot of those on some Florida beaches.  Not knowing much about them,I  just put them aside unless there was something very obvious that stuck out to me.   Using the magnet test, I quickly found three silver Canadian coins, plus the coin above, which is not Canadian but which was in with the Canadian coins.

So I guess I'll take a better look through my miscellaneous world coins before deciding what I'll do with most of them.

There are some very valuable Canadian error and variety coins.  It takes some research to know what to look for, but these days you can do that research online.  Here is link to a good web site on Canadian coins.  It covers most anything you might need to know about Canadian coins.

Archaeologists investigating a cave in the cliffs below Culzean Castle have discovered the remains of a medieval doorway.
The doorway had lain hidden for centuries under rocks and sand thrown up by the stormy seas.
The current Culzean Castle, which is perched on coastal cliffs near Maybole in Ayrshire, was designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th Century.
But the caves system in the cliffs goes back much further...

Here is that link for more about that.

The tropics are becoming more active.  There is Tropical Storm Florence and another area coming off Africa, but the most important for us right now is the system that has been hanging around down by Hispaniola.

There is some chance that it will become a tropical storm and pass over South Florida and into the Gulf, as shown below.

It looks like it won't do a lot for the Treasure Coast beaches.  The surf will increase to three to five feet on Monday, but it looks like the wave angles won't be good.

8/6/17 Report - Potential Tropical Cyclone Seven Getting Organized. Mauron Watch. Gold--Filled Jewelry.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com.

The system down by Central America (red X) is being referred to as Potential Tropical Cyclone Seven and is moving very slowly west/northwest.  It looks like it will head towards Yucatan and into the Gulf, as shown below.  That is one to watch.  It has a 90% chance of becoming a cyclone in the next 48 hours.

Predicted Path of Tropical Storm Seven.

The other system is still out in the middle Atlantic and has only a 20 percent chance of becoming a cyclone in the next 48 hours.  Some models predict that it will go north of us, and some south of us, and one has it targeting us.  That is a few days away in any case.  It might fall apart.

The surf on the Treasure Coast will increase a little tomorrow, but just up to 2 - 3 feet.

I did a little research on the watch I showed yesterday.  Among the watches by Mauron are ladies brooch and lapel watches.  I think it is probably a lapel watch.  I found many examples of those that were gold filled.  The one I showed yesterday looks like it could very well be gold filled.

I haven't talked much about gold jewelry lately.  Gold plated is when an item, often copper, is covered with a very thin, almost microscopic, film of pure gold electroplating. Some businesses refer to gold-plated jewelry as gold-overlay; however, those are essentially the same things.

Gold filled jewelry is much more valuable than gold-plated. In fact, there is almost 100 percent more gold in gold-filled items than gold-plated items.

It seems gold filled items are marked in various ways, but when an item is marked with the fraction 14/20, it means that the item contains 1/20 of 14 karat gold with relation to the brass fill/core (5%). If the product is stamped 12/20, it is made of 1/20 of 12 karat gold.

Thats all for now.

9/5/15 Report - Colonial Numismatic Presentations With Sedwick Auction. Sacred Heart Reales. Tropical Depression Seven.

Sedwick Coins Treasure Auction 18 Coming In October
The Potosi mint produced some oddly shaped cobs.  Some appear to represent the Sacred Heart.  The exact purpose or use is unknown, but some think they were used by church officials.

Many were "holed," and I've read they were sometimes sewn into clothing.

Here is a link to a Sedwick report on the heart shaped cobs

Very Soft Sand Treasure Coast Beach This Morning.
You can see where the last high tide stopped.

I visited four beaches this morning before finally finding one I thought was worth detecting.  At that last beach I found a good number of coins in a small area and slightly more sinkers.  I think it was something like 60 per cent sinkers to 40 percent coins.  All fairly new coins.  I've found old stuff at that location before, but the conditions were so poor I was lucky to find as many coins as I did.  I'll be happy when we get cooler weather.  I was soaked with sweat from digging all those deep coins - and sinkers.

Even at low tide, the sand seems to extend out another twenty or so yards into the water before dropping off.  That is a lot of sand that needs to be moved.  Hopefully some day it will get moved.

Fred is still out there but not coming this way.  Tropical depression seven might come this way though.  It is still way over by Africa at this point.

We're going to have a flat surf through Labor Day.

Happy Hunting,
