12/4/18 Report - A Pot of Gold Coins Found. A President Laid To Rest. More Lady Liberty Coins.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com.

Cache of Gold Coins.
Source: See BBC.com link below.

The rare cache was found - along with a single gold earring - in a bronze pot between stones in the side of a well.

The hoard of 24 coins appears to have been hidden by someone who hoped to retrieve it, but never returned.

Archaeologists say the owner may have died when the city's inhabitants were massacred by a Crusader army in 1101.

The discovery was made during an excavation and conservation project at the Caesarea World Heritage site...

Here is the link for more about that.

Many caches are found during construction projects. I think I forgot to mention that when I listed ways they are often found.

Yesterday the nation's attention was focused on a flag over a coffin in the rotunda of the Capital Building.  Despite the strong feelings, thoughts and memories of those who gathered around the coffin or watched it on TV, George Herbert Walker Bush was no longer there.  The spirit of  life was drawn to and illuminated by its mirror image.

It was mentioned that George Herbert Walked Bush went to war at 18 to serve his country.  I thought of the many thousands of young men who did the same, including those who died on foreign soil only a short time later; as well as those that came back to live long lives never speaking much of the matter again.

While my mind was with those who gathered at the Capital building yesterday, my mind was also drawn to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the many silent cemeteries around the country, as well as the families those silent nameless soldiers created, protected, supported and left behind.

Without at all lessening the honor and respect deserved by the former president, I thought of the nameless or forgotten men and women, who lived well, gave much, were perhaps unfairly judged, and lived honorably out of the public light doing the best the could where they were planted.

Every person is unique, but in some ways we are also the same.  All men begin their journey at a different place, and travel a different path, but end up at the same narrow gate.

May we seek and find understanding, judge as we would like to be judged, and respect and honor others to the best of our ability.

Yesterday I posted some information about Lady Liberty as seen on our coins.  Warren D. sent me a couple examples along with the following message.

1781 Coin or Token

One I believe is a Gaelic (Irish) token which is copper and was given to Irish immigrants who came to North America probably Canada at the time.
It is dated 1781. I think it was given to them as a form of currency, I'm not sure if it truly was. It looks like lady liberty seated on one side and a sailing ship on the other side.

The other is a US large cent dated 1816.
1816 Large Cent.

Thanks Warren.

There were over a thousand page views of this blog yesterday.

Last night I observed a lot of lightening in the distance over the ocean and this morning we got some rain.

The high tides are still fairly high.

The surf will be increasing later in the week, but only up to about two or three feet.  That won't help much.

Happy hunting,

Jewelry was found buried with a 1500-year-old skeleton.

Here is that link.

Maybe you saw this one on TV.  It was on Fox Business this morning. A fellow proposed to his fiancĂ© in New York City.  The ring fell into a sewer grate.  The police were not able to get it out that night and the couple gave up on it and flew back home, leaving no address.  The next morning the police looked for it again and got it out but didn't know how to contact the couple.  The put it on Twitter and a friend of the couple saw it and told them, so they got the ring back.

Here is the link.

Nice work by the police.   It also shows how the world is very connected now by social media.

To those of you who don't detect, if you lose something don't give up on it right away.  At least leave a contact phone or address.  Sometimes things do turn up.

I read where someone was going to buy a Tesoro metal detector because of the advertised lifetime warranty.  I've mentioned this before, but Tesoro won't honor the "lifetime" warranty when they determine the detector is obsolete.  I have two "obsolete" Tesoro detectors, which they won't repair under warranty.  So "lifetime" doesn't mean to them what you would think it does.

Here are the major steps in the evolution of Lady Liberty on U. S. coins as excerpted from a recent U.S. Mint press release.

With the recent celebration of the 225th anniversary of the United States Mint, we will also be celebrating the 225th birthday of the ever-present Lady Liberty. Throughout the past few centuries, we’ve seen her on our coinage as a constantly evolving emblem. Lady Liberty has been depicted sitting or standing, with an axe or sword, her hair flowing behind her or pinned back, and more. Despite her many forms, we always recognize her as the symbol from which she began...

Flowing Hair Dollar

1794: The First Lady Liberty Coin

Her first silver dollar is now commonly known as the "Flowing Hair" dollar...

1795: The Next Coin With Lady Liberty

The Draped Bust dollar...

1836: The Year Lady Liberty Starts to Evolve

The “Gobrecht” dollar and the "Seated Liberty" dollar that followed departed from the profiles and busts of past coinage...

1878: The New Face of Lady Liberty

In 1878, Lady Liberty reverted back to a bust in profile view with the "Morgan" dollar...

1916: The Naked Lady Liberty Coin

... With an olive branch in hand, this depiction was meant to represent peace, but the 1916 quarter showed her standing between two pillars with one breast exposed...

1921: Lady Liberty Makes Peace

The Peace dollar...

2017: The New Face of Lady Liberty

,.. Last year, the United States Mint announced that a commemorative hundred-dollar coin would be released to celebrate its upcoming 225th anniversary. One side will again feature Lady Liberty’s proud profile, but this time she is African American...

Here is the link for the rest of that press release from the US Mint.

11/30/18 Report - Indian River Lagoon Muck Dredging. Expanding World Coin List. Euro and Other World Coins.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of treasubeachesreport.blogspot.com.

They are going to dredge tons and tons of muck from the Indian River Lagoon.  The project has been started in some areas.

The Florida Inland Navigation District plans to build a nearly 10-acre basin between the road and the Florida East Coast railroad track to hold muck and sand dredged from the Intracoastal Waterway channel in the southern half of St. Lucie County, roughly from Midway Road to the Martin County line.

Construction at the 20-acre site about a mile north of Walton Road will begin within a year and take about a year to complete, said Mark Crosley, FIND executive director....

FLORIDA INLAND NAVIGATION DISTRICT MUCK DUMP SITE

Where: 10315 S. Indian River Drive, about a mile north of Walton Road

Description: Permanent facility to process sediment removed from the Intracoastal Waterway in southern St. Lucie County
Site size: 20.3 acres
Basin size: 9.67 acres
Impacted area: 13.09 acres
Basin capacity: 84,268 cubic yards
Amount to be dredged: 15,200 to 30,400 cubic yards
Estimate of sediment to be dumped over 50 years: 76,029 cubic yards

At this time the muck dump is well underway. You can see it from Indian River Drive.

Hard to tell what might be in all that dredged material.

Gaylen C. sent pictures of coins he found from Venezuela and Portugal, and Sherman W. reported finding a few from Australia.

Here is the updated list of world coins found in Florida.

Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Canada, Cuba, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Haiti, European Union, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Isle of Man, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine, Uruguay, Venezuela, Virgin Islands.

I just remembered a Greek coin that I found, but it was from B. C. and not a part of the modern state of Greece so I haven't added it to the list.

I also added the European Union.

Here is what Wikipedia says about the Euro.

The euro is the result of the European Union's project for economic and monetary union which came fully into being 1 January 2002 and it is now the currency used by the majority European Union's member states with all but two bound to adopt it. It is the currency used by the institutions of the European Union and in the failed European Constitution it was to be included with the symobls of Europe as the formal currency of the European Union. The euro is also widely used by other states outside the EU.sn

Except for the two states with opt outs, all current and future members of the EU are obliged to adopt the Euro as their currency, thus replacing their current ones.[2] The relationship between euro and non-euro states has been on debate both during the UK's membership (as a large opt-out state) and in light of withdrawal from the EU and how that impacts the balance of power between those in and out of the euro; namely avoiding a eurozone caucus out-voting non-euro states. The UK had called for the EU treaties to recognise the EU as a "multicurrency union", which sparked concerns about undermining euro adoption in remaining countries.[1] [3][4][5]

Below are pictures of Galyen's coins.  The first pair appear to be Euros.

Here is a beat up Euro I had.

Notice the outline of the various countries separated to the left of the big 20, suggesting preservation of individuality within the union.  You know what is going on there now.  They are having trouble holding it together.  Political messages are often meant to counter oppositional trends.

Coins usually carry a message.

It always amazes me how so few design elements are used over and over again in different locations and at different time periods.

Here is a what appears to me to be a modernized Lady Liberty on a French coin.

Here is what Lady Liberty looks like on an American Eagle.

I think that is a very attractive coin.

Here is liberty personified on a coin from Chile.

Is there a political message? Who is trying to say what to whom and why?

The PM high tide is going to be good and high on the Treasure Coast today.  The surf will only be about one foot though.

We'll be having south winds for a while.
