12/17/18 Report - The Daring Shipwreck. Colored Crayons. Snakes and Snake Heads. Interpretation of Symbols and Artifacts.

Gold Snake Ring With Diamond Eyes.

The New Zealand shipwreck given up from its sandy grave after 153 years has rolled away on the back of a truck.

The timber hull of the 17m-long sailing vessel, the Daring, whose shroud of sand was wiped away by wind and tide, has this week been transported from its 1865 resting place.

A coastal trader under the control of Captain Phipps, the Daring went aground at Kaipara Harbour's South Head, northwest of Muriwai in a February storm. Efforts to re-launch the vessel in the surf during the following weeks were unsuccessful and the it was claimed by the beach...

A 50.000-year-old colored pencil or crayon?

The pre-historic artists were not Homo sapiens but Denisovans - a long-extinct branch of ancient man - or possibly Neanderthals, another vanished sub-species, believe scientists.

The crayon was used to make reddish brown marks.

It was found in a layer of the world famous Denisova Cave this summer...

8300-year-old carved snake heads?

What might be passed over as two oddly shaped rocks are the work of Stone Age artisans who sculpted the rocks into beady-eyed snake heads, archaeologists have found.

It's a mystery why these ancient people, who lived in what is now Ukraine, created the stoney serpents, but the researchers have a good guess.

"These sculptures could have ritual purpose," said study lead researcher Nadiia Kotova, an archaeologist in the Department of the Eneolithic and Bronze Age at the Institute of Archaeology National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Ukraine. "They were probably used during ceremonies...

When it is difficult to find out what an item is or what it was actually used for, it often gets thrown into the category of gaming or religious.  That is easy enough, but I think those categories are over used.

If you've found many rings, you've probably found some snake rings.  They are about as common as the lion head rings.

At the top of the post is one snake ring that I found and posted back a number of years ago.  (My photography wasn't as good back then.)

The snake is a common and basic symbol that is about as old as man.  You all know the creation story in which the snake plays a large roll.  Any attempt to place a snake image in either a time or  culture can be difficult.  Like many other basic symbols, it is simply too common.  I'm tempted to say universal.

The same goes for the cross.  The cross has a special meaning in Christianity, but it is not unique to Christianity.  If you read Carl Jung you'll learn that the mandala ( which has a cross form ) is a very basic symbol that crosses cultures and historical periods.  To put a cross into a particular time period of culture you have to depend upon additional features or elaborations than the basic cross form itself.

Anyone who attempts to interpret artifacts will be benefited by the writings of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell.

That reminds me of the stone snake of Eldorado Canyon, which I once wrote about in this blog some years ago.  I've told that story many times, including on a radio program.  I think it is a good lesson.

The tides on the Treasure Coast are not big now, and there won't be much surf for at least a few days.

A three-thousand-year-old leather bag of jewelry was found by archaeologists.

The treasure itself consists of jewelry of Bronze spirals and tin funnel-shaped hangers that were probably put into the ground in a leather package with three Bronze disk-like objects sewed to the top. The remains of organic leather material that is about 3000 years old were kept between them and the jewelry...

The funeral of George Herbert Walked Bush was a time for reflection.  It was something I think our country needed as the political leaders from both sides came together to honor an exemplary life.  It was a time for everybody to step back and gain some perspective.  I'm sure it won't have any huge long-term impact, but I am hoping that people on both sides learned something.  If they don't, it is not the fault of the Bushes or any of the speakers, each of which provided plenty of food for thought.

I was especially impressed by the Presidential historian, Jon Meacham.  Too bad everybody doesn't have a personal historian.  Georg H. W. Bush's story is exceptional, but everybody has a story.

Many people don't know their own story.  Maybe they've never thought about it, and they haven't taken the time to step back and get the larger picture.  It is worth considering.

Each person's story consists of more than the things they did and the things that happened to them.    There is a theme, and plots and subplots.   Introspection, analysis and insight is required.  There is psychological element and interpretation.

Personal stories are part fiction and part fact.  They are often influenced by family stories, such as grandpa was the toughest man in the county, or grandma as a great musician that was descended from royalty, or you come from a long line of achievers, or great great grandpa was a slave brought here from Africa.

Those stories might or might not be entirely true.  Often they have some basis in fact but are not entirely accurate.   But true or not, they can become part of each family members personal story.

How would you describe yourself?  How do you want your children to see themselves?  Think about it.  You might not have someone like Jon Meacham to tell your story, but if you think about it, you will discover that you are developing a story worth passing on.

Yesterday I incorrectly referred to the EM61 as a GPR system.  When I watched the TV show I didn't catch the full name of the system.  It is actually a metal detector.

I made corrections to my references in yesterday's post and provided a link for more information about the EM61.  Here is the link to information about the EM61.

I once had a book, I think it was by Frank Hudson, that had a list of pirate treasure signs and symbols in it.  I couldn't find it so went looking for it online.  I didn't find it, but I did find a document detailing pages of treasure signs.

http://www.tseatc.com/files/Download/THAPI_pgs1-10.pdf

The symbols shown at the top of this post are from that document.

This is the largest list of treasure signs that I've seen compiled.  I know the same symbols can be found in other less extensive sources.

It looks like the Treasure Coast surf will remain small for a few days.  According to the MagicSeaWeed predictions, there is the possibility of a bigger surf in about a week.

We've had a few days of north wind, and I suspect there will be a few small insignificant cuts on the beaches.
