Silver 1941 Netherlands Quarter /

Do you know how many silver coins you've found?  I didn't.

If you metal detect around Florida resort areas very much you'll find coins from all over the world.  I had a accumulated quite a few and didn't know much about them, so a few weeks ago I asked my readers if anyone had any good ideas what to do with miscellaneous world coins.

The first thing I decided to do was take a better look at them.  One step in the process was to run a magnet over groups of coins.  That will give you information about what they are made of.   It can be a good thing to do when you are looking for silver coins.

Some coins, including a lot of Canadian nickels and quarters will stick to the magnet.  The silver ones won't though.  That is one quick way to scan for silver coins.

As another example, running a magnet over a bunch of pennies, will help you find the steel war pennies, which will stick to the magnet.  But I want to talk about foreign coins now.

Just the other day I was looking through some Canadian coins.  You can find a lot of those on some Florida beaches.  Not knowing much about them,I  just put them aside unless there was something very obvious that stuck out to me.   Using the magnet test, I quickly found three silver Canadian coins, plus the coin above, which is not Canadian but which was in with the Canadian coins.

So I guess I'll take a better look through my miscellaneous world coins before deciding what I'll do with most of them.

There are some very valuable Canadian error and variety coins.  It takes some research to know what to look for, but these days you can do that research online.  Here is link to a good web site on Canadian coins.  It covers most anything you might need to know about Canadian coins.

Archaeologists investigating a cave in the cliffs below Culzean Castle have discovered the remains of a medieval doorway.
The doorway had lain hidden for centuries under rocks and sand thrown up by the stormy seas.
The current Culzean Castle, which is perched on coastal cliffs near Maybole in Ayrshire, was designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th Century.
But the caves system in the cliffs goes back much further...

Here is that link for more about that.

The tropics are becoming more active.  There is Tropical Storm Florence and another area coming off Africa, but the most important for us right now is the system that has been hanging around down by Hispaniola.

There is some chance that it will become a tropical storm and pass over South Florida and into the Gulf, as shown below.

It looks like it won't do a lot for the Treasure Coast beaches.  The surf will increase to three to five feet on Monday, but it looks like the wave angles won't be good.

Happy hunting,
