3/10/20 Report - Treasure Coast Beaches and Miscellaneous Observations. Sunken Treasure on TV.

Detectorist at Frederick Douglass Monday.

The front came through and some beaches got cut by the north winds.  Then the wind shifted more to the east, and by Monday it was a little southerly.  By Monday there was filling on some beaches.  There was even sea weed on some beaches.  That is usually not a good sign.

There were detectorists out Monday.  I saw them working at both John Brooks and Frederick Douglass beaches.

You can tell from the footprints that the sand was soft.

DJ sent the above photo showing the older layer of sand showing at the base of the dunes.

 A lot of detectorists showed up a Turtle Trail today just before low tide Monday.

Good steep slope on the dune face, however notice the soft sand and deep footprints.

Notice the tell-tale sea-oats plugs on the renourishment sand.  Thank government for spending money on those.  Most of them have washed away.

From what I've seen and heard so far, there were more and better finds Saturday than either Sunday or Monday.  Beach conditions were starting to deteriorate Sunday and continued deteriorating Monday.

I did see and hear of some nice finds Sunday - both gold and silver.  I haven't received any photos from readers yet but hope to.  It appears there weren't nearly as many good recent finds as were made in February though.  The recent finds were mostly on the smaller side, ie. half reales and a piece of a corroded small ring that looked to be shipwreck.

I'm trying to get a few things cleaned and hope to get them photographed before long, but I have a lot of other things to do.

Sitting here watching Drain the Oceans Sunken Treasure 2018 ch 197 Dish .They found a mother load of Spanish silver and mixed in were coins that predate the mint date by 150 years .They were being smuggled for trading in East Asia by the East India Tea Company. This brought to mind your recent article.  (Referring to the post on the old could found by Terry S.)  Hope that you can find this National Geographic episode

TM was digging a target at the base of a dune near Seagrape and out came what appears to be blue and white glass.  He was wondering what you thought it might be.

The surf is predicted to continue decreasing for a few days.  Expect more beach building with the continuing ESE winds.

1/16/20 Report - Cortes' Aztec Gold Bar Plunder Analyzed. Beach Reports and Photos.

A new scientific analysis of a large gold bar found decades ago in downtown Mexico City has confirmed it was part of the plunder Spanish conquistadors abandoned as they beat a temporary retreat from the Aztec capital...

A year later, Cortés would return and lay siege to the city, which was already weakened with supply lines cut and diseases that accompanied the Spanish invaders taking a toll.

The bar was originally discovered in 1981 during a construction project some 16ft (5m) underground in downtown Mexico City – which was built on the ruins of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlán – where a canal that would have been used by the fleeing Spaniards was once located.

The bar weighs about 2kg (4.4lb) and is 26.2cm (10.3in) long, 5.4cm wide and 1.4cm thick...

We got to Turtle Trails at just after sunrise.    Pretty smoothed down beach.   Less sand than a few weeks ago.   We went north to just about Sea Grape.   Just a couple modern nails.    Real deep.

After Turtle we headed north. Wabasso was still closed until the 20th. We went to Golden Sands then to Bonsteel Park. Beach re- nourishments going on as we were there. Talked to somebody they said all the way to Melbourne. We didn’t do any detecting on this leg.

1/29/19 Report - UPDATED: Spanish Finds Being Made. Report From Bonsteel and Turtle Trail.

Continuing my efforts to give you the best information first, I'm going to go ahead and post an email I got from Ron J. last night.  I might have more to post later today.  If so, I'll add to this post.

John Brooks is the only  beach I visited and showed yesterday, but there are other areas on the Treasure Coast that eroded.  Here is  what Ron had to say about a couple other beaches you might be interested in visiting..

I went to Bonsteel Park and Turtle Trail today [Mon.].

Bonsteel going North past "Chucks Stake House had a fresh cut knee high or more in places. Going to the South the cut was less than knee high.  I was there almost at high tide and the water was approaching the cut. The last tide had washed over the cut in a lot of places. The replenishment sand from the newly planted sea oats to the cut was 10 to 15 ft. to the cut. I detected in front of the cut then on the way back detected the wash over on top of the cut. The sand in front of the cut was both sort of firm and mushy with black sand in the firm areas.

Found one rusty screw below the cut.

Turtle Trail had a fresh cut over knee high and the tide was in with water washing over the cut.  I did not detect there.

Sorry I did not take a camera.

I was using a Whites Dual Field detector....

I said I would probably be back.  Well, I'm back, but I didn't expect it to be so late.   I just have time to give you the bottom line.

11/12/17 Report - Rough Surf But Little Erosion. South Hutchinson Island and North. Bottle Finds.

Rough Surf This Morning.

The surf along the Treasure Coast was supposed to be something like 5 - 8 feet this morning.  I went out to take a look and saw the above around 7:30 AM.  There was a lot of white water.  It looked like there was a lot of sand extending out maybe 75 yards or so.  The waves were hitting the beach straight on.  There was no erosion yet where I was.  Maybe there will be some erosion somewhere along the Treasure Coast, but I didn't see it this morning.  With all the north wind we had the past couple of days, you would hope for something, but when we had the north wind, we didn't have much surf.

You can usually find something, even when detecting isn't good, but this morning there weren't many shells and I didn't see any fossils, but I did pick up a few bottles quickly yesterday, so that is something I might do when I get the chance.

Newly Found Bottles.

These bottles aren't worth much, but they tell me that there might be some good ones out there if I look a little more.  I would call them markers or signal finds.  While they aren't worth much, they provide some good information.

The one on the left is a CastorOil bottle and the one in the middle is a pharmacy bottle.

We just haven't had very good conditions lately.  Even Irma didn't do a whole lot of us.  There is a lot of sand in the shallow water in front of the treasure beaches of South Hutchinson Island.

Darrel has been hunting a lot recently and has been reporting very few signals.  He is going to try a new coil.  Maybe we'll get a report on that.

10/28/17 Report - Tropical Storm Coming. Schooner Dollars. Coin Collecting in 1910. 8 Reale From Bonsteel.

Tropical Storm 18 is headed towards Florida.  It doesn't look like it will do us much good though.  We'll eventually get some north winds and swells but the surf will be small.  A lot of the wind will be coming from the west.

As you probably know, Bonsteel is known for the many half reales, not so much for larger denominations.

There is a TV program on the Science channel you might like.  I think it is called What On Earth.  They do a little too much hookum, but if you can tolerate that, they show some interesting stuff.
