10/10/18 Report - Hurricanes and Finds. It's All About the People. Michael Hits. New Named Storm.

Family Gathering.
How quickly things change!  This photo is about 65 years old.  It is a photo of a family gathering that occurred twice every year back in the 1950s. It doesn't seem very long ago to me, but the little girl standing middle-front is now a great grandmother, and six of the nine adults are deceased.

So what does that have to do with metal detecting?  Those family gatherings happened every year in the same two yards, alternating spring and fall.  There was a lot of fun and laughter.  Coins and other things were lost in those yards during those gatherings and at other times.  Even the dimes and quarters that were brand new at the time were silver.  And then there would be the older coins and things that that were lost in earlier years.

I've talked about metal detecting your own family history before.  I was able to go back and detect the yard where I grew up and found some of my old metal toy soldiers and trucks exactly where I remember playing with them.  It brings back a lot of memories.  But the main point I wanted to make today is that there are real people behind those coins and things you dig up, no matter how new or old they are.  Those items can mean a lot to someone.  They might not mean as much to you. Your finds will mean more to you if you let your imagination wander when you dig up a object, and think about how it got there, and think about the people that came and went and laughed and played on that very ground before you got there.

Michael, unfortunately, is no angel.  It came ashore pretty much where predicted, but as a stronger storm than expected.  There was time to prepare, but you are never fully prepared for something like that.

There will be improved metal detecting in various areas, especially up around the Florida Panhandle, but just like with finds, it is about the people.  Help however you can.  There will be a lot of people that will have a hard time recovering from this.

I heard on the radio that despite the King Tides, the flooding was less than expected.  I thought I heard something about the sea levels not being high.  I couldn't believe my ears, and maybe I didn't get it right.  I didn't catch it all.

Another Named Storm.

As you can see there is another named storm out there: Nadine.  I don't think we have to worry at all about either Leslie or Nadine.  They are expected to stay far out in the Atlantic.

Expected Track of Michael.

As you can see, Michael is going to remain strong a storm as it crosses various southeast states.   The northeast will get some northeast winds and possibly some erosion.  We won't get much.  The Treasure Coast is on the wrong side of that storm for much erosion.

It seems trivial to talk about metal detecting when so many people will be having so much to deal with.

Happy hunting,
