12/5/19 Report - Christmas Silver Coins. Silver Prices Over the Years. Bottle For ID. Sedwick News.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com.

Once Ounce Silver Ingot.

This isn't my Christmas greeting.  I think it's too early for that, but if you are shopping, here is an idea: it is a once ounce silver Christmas round.  This one was selling for $28.95 - quite a bit above the price of silver.

Some of them are very nicely colorized.  I don't  think this kind of thing has appreciated great over the recent years and decades.  I wouldn't consider it a safe bet as investment, but it might make a nice gift.

Here is the chart of silver prices (inflation adjusted) beginning 1915.

It seems like silver, gold and coins always look like really good investments until you adjust for inflation.

If you have some junk silver around, think about melting it down and making something new.

There are classes you can take on lost wax casting.  I did that once, and even sold some of my junk silver to other class members to use in the class.

Here is the link to the price chart.

Joe D. wasn't able to find much information about this bottle and would like some help.  Looks like a soda bottle, and it looks like the bottle was manufactured in 1931.

The bottom provides a lot of information.

Looks like patent no. 83427.   I haven't seen a College Inn bottle before, but shouldn't be too difficult to run down.

Any help appreciated.

Here is a note from Sedwick Coins.  They'll be at the Fun Convention in Orlando on January 9.

Also remember they are taking consignments for the next auction.

The tides and surf are still small but the surf will be increasing a little next week.

1/15/19 Report - WW I Wreck Exposed. Genuine $3 Million Coin. FUN Convention and Counterfeits. Great Research Sites.

Remains of WW I Sub Exposed.
Source: See BBC link below.

Shifting sand off Wissant, near Calais, is exposing the remains of the UC-61 which was stranded there in July 1917...
It is now becoming a tourist attraction again, although the local mayor warns it may only be a fleeting visit...
"The wreck is visible briefly every two to three years, depending on the tides and the wind that leads to sand movements, but a good gust of wind and the wreck will disappear again," said Mayor of Wissant Bernard Bracq...

Here is an excerpt from an article that talks a bit about the recently concluded FUN convention in Orlando, counterfeits and the recent history of numismatics.

Nowadays, the Internet has reorganized how we collect...

I held fake clad quarters in my hand at the FUN show thanks to Beth Deisher and the Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force of the Professional Numismatists Guild.

They have the correct electronic signature to fool vending machines.

Most collectors would have no trouble seeing that they are fake.

These coins are not intended to be offered as collectibles.

Collectors might not even look at a clad quarter in their hand if they don’t think the Chinese would bother to fake our circulating coins.

They need to think again. We all do...

… An 1885 Proof Trade Dollar certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) realized an astonishing $3,960,000 at auction, one of the highest prices ever paid for a coin. This coin led a group of NGC-certified rarities that achieved extraordinary results in the Heritage Auctions Platinum Night sale, held January 10, 2019, at the FUN Show in Orlando, Florida...

The price realized by the Eliasberg specimen is the second-highest at auction for an NGC-certified coin, surpassed only by a 1787 Brasher Doubloon. Graded NGC MS 63, that coin was sold by Heritage Auctions for $4,582,500 in January 2014....

Today I want to bring attention to some of the great reference links in my Treasure Site Reference Link List.  There are some really good links there that I'm sure you will find useful.  I find my self usng to them often.

On top of the list you will find the 18th Century Material Culture Resource Center link.  Great site.
http://materialculture18t.wixsite.com/18thcmcrc

After that you will find a very extensive database of Spanish coinage.  It is one of the most extensive and useful reference sites that I've seen.
http://www.fuenterrebollo.com/faqs-numismatica/menu2.html

Then there is the token database. Again very useful and extensive.
http://tokencatalog.com/

And the Society for Historical Archaeology antique bottle web site.
https://sha.org/bottle/makersmarks.htm

Also the Spanish Colonial Military Artifacts site.
http://www.artifacts.org/default.htm

These and some of the others in the list are some of the best artifact reference sites.   Take a look.  They are there on the first page of my blog for your easy access.

We really haven't had much good beach hunting weather this Fall or Winter yet.  There have been a lot of fronts come through, but only lasting one day or so, and producing not much more than one foot cuts.

We are going to have some higher surf for a couple of days, but only three to five feet.

Here are the MagicSeaWeed surf predictions.

Archaeologists in Egypt have unearthed a 2,200-year-old gold coin depicting the ancient King Ptolemy III, an ancestor of the famed Cleopatra.

The coin, which bears the image of the King on one of its faces, was discovered during the excavation of a large Greco-Roman building at the San El-Hagar archaeological site in Northern Egypt...

A mysterious ancient black granite sarcophagus has been discovered in Egypt.

The tomb, which dates back to the Ptolemaic period between 305 B.C. and 30 B.C., was uncovered in the city of Alexandria.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Mostafa Waziri, general secretary of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, announced that the 6-foot high sarcophagus, which is 8.7-feet long and 5.4-feet wide, is the largest ever found in Alexandria...

Chris and Remnants of Beryl

 Wind This Morning.
Chris is near hurricane strength is supposed to turn into a hurricane and head north.  It will also move east before long.

In the mean time, the best chance for good beach erosion is the cape off North Carolina.

On the Treasure Coast, we are supposed to have a three to four foot surf, decreasing tomorrow.

I have a lot of future posts already planned.  I'll be showing a variety of cobs from one hunt.  Before August is over I expect to post some good metal detector tests and reviews that I'll conduct myself.

Happy hunting,

1/6/15 Report - Two-Million-Dollar Gold Coin. FUN Convention in Orlando. Florida State Museum Treasure Exhibit.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of treasurebeachesreport.BlogSpot.com.

Two-Million Dollar Gold Coin.

Bidding starts Wednesday night at the Orlando Convention Center for this 1907 twenty-dollar gold coin expected to sell for near 2 million dollars.  Bids of well over one million have already been offered.

This high relief gold piece is said to be the most beautiful coin ever.

Below is a link to a video about that.

Don't forget the FUN convention in Orlando January 8 through January 11.   Among the many highlights will be the Florida State Museum Treasure Exhibit.  According to the FUN web sites, many of treasure items from the museum have not been "... on pubic display for decades, and may never be again!"  That sounds like a great opportunity to see items that have been found on our public lands and kept at public expense, yet are hidden away for the benefit of a few.  Many of the items are from the 1715 Fleet on display in celebration of the 300th Anniversary.

This is a huge convention and it is only a couple hours away.

Here is a link for more information.

http://www.funtopics.com/fun-convention.html

Russ P. reminded me that the convention is this weekend.  Thanks Russ.

I previously mentioned a big hoard find that I couldn't previously tell you about.  I'll be able to post the details on that soon.

Concerning the mystery item I've been discussing, one more person thought it might be a "paint pot."  Two people thought it might be an aerator for a bait bucket.

While the size and shape seem right for an aerator, I don't know why an aerator wouldn't be made of plastic or some material that could be easily manufactured for less than a penny and would be much less fragile unless it was older and hand made.

Yesterday morning, I think just before noon, the wind picked up and was coming out of the North.

The Treasure Coast surf is predicted to be about three feet on Tuesday, a little less on Wednesday and then a bump up to near five feet on Thursday.   The wind is supposed to stay mostly out of the North during that period.

10/15/14 Report - 300 Year Anniversary of 1715 Fleet. Valuable Coin Found In Roll, 1000 Year Old Coin Detected. Shark Feeding Frenzy

Coral Beads From Rosary Listed

Notice the barnacles.
Next year marks three hundred years since the 1715 Fleet disaster.  Some one wrote in and asked about any special events for the commemoration.

The first big event that I know of will be at the Florida United Numismatists Convention in Orlando.  The FUN Convention, which will be held at the Orange County Convention Center January 8 through the 11th, will include a display of 1715 Fleet treasures and artifacts from the State of Florida collection.

That will be the biggest display of 1715 Fleet items at the convention but undoubtedly there will be more.  I'd expect Sedwick Coins to be there too, for example.  They usually are at FUN Conventions.

The 1715 Plate Society will present a two-day seiminar July 28 and 29 at the Vero Beach Museum of Art.

On Aug. 13, Indian River County Main Library will provide lectures and there will be a display or 1715 Fleet artifacts.

The McLarty and Mel Fisher Museums will undoubtedly also host events.

I'll try to provide more details when the time gets nearer.

Here is a link that talks about the anniversary year events.

A man was searching through a roll of Kennedy halves looking for silver and found a coin that might be worth two or three thousand dollars.   He found a very special 1861-O Seated Liberty half-dollar.

Here is the link to that article.

One detectorist was lucky enough to dug up a coin that is over 1000 years old.

The article says, An extremely rare 1,250 year-old silver coin found by a treasure hunter with a metal detector in a field near Newbury last year, has sold at auction for £336.   [Around $500]

The Anglo-Saxon coin, known as a sceat, was struck between the years 710AD and 760AD and, although it was buried in the ground for more than 1,000 years, it is described as being in “extremely fine/very fine” condition according to London auctioneers Spink.

Here is the link to that article.

Here is a cool video showing a shark feeding frenzy that brought them right up onto the sand.

http://xfinity.comcast.net/video/Shark-Feeding-Frenzy-Caught-On-Tape/342433859653/Comcast/CaughtonTape/?cid=hero_sf_caught_sharks

I've seen sharks in shallow water while detecting, but they never seemed much interested in me, which is good.

There was one barracuda that used to keep an eye on me so continually that it got on my nerves.

He was always around the same area.

Armour Listed In Sedwick Coins Auction.
Notice the dent.  Musket ball maybe.

Back a few days ago I was talking about wear and tear and encrustation and stuff that you'll sometimes find on items.  The pictures that I posed today are two items in the Sedwick Coins auction that show nice marks of character.

Gonzalo turned into a strong hurricane but is staying east of the Bahamas.

On the Treasure Coast it looks like we'll be looking at something like a 3 or 4 foot surf for a few days.

I'll keep an eye on the remaining disturbance in the Atlantic.

Happy hunting,
