9/11/18 Report - Florence and Other Storms. Tools For Identifying Coins. Historic Silver Prices.

The predictions haven't changed much.  Florence is still headed towards North/South Carolina, but maybe a little later than previously expected.  Evacuation orders are out for the Carolinas.

Pray for their safety.

The surf predictions have remained about the same too.  Wednesday Florence will be nearing the Carolina coast and sending some northeast/north winds waves our way, creating a bigger surf for a day or two.  After that the wind will turn and the surf will flatten out some.  After that the big question will be Gordon.

At this time is looks like Gordon will weaken and remain well to the south of us.

Before all the storms popped up, I was inspecting old coin finds and telling how useful a magnet can be for identifying coins.  I told how you can use a magnet to find silver coins or steel pennies, for example.  I showed some Canadian silver coins that I recently found among my finds.  Well, I just found two more silver coins - both Kennedy halves.  That includes a 1967 and 1968 half.  They are both 40% silver and can be identified as silver by looking at the coin edges.

A good scale will show you that unless they've been damaged or something, the 80% silver Kennedy halves (1964) weight a few grams more than the 40% silver halves, which will weigh more than the later Kennedy halves that don't containing any silver.

A good scale can also  help you identify the composition of coins, so if you have a bunch of coin finds to scan, a magnet and a good scale can prove very useful.  Those tools are not only useful for identifying Kennedy halves and other modern coins, they can also help you identify colonial coins and fakes.

Above is a chart showing historic silver prices in US dollars per ounce.

As you can see there were two big spikes.  One was in 1980.  I remember that one.  The other was in 2011.  If you were smart enough to sell at the top of either of those peaks, in a few months you could buy again at a much lower price.

Yesterday was the anniversary of hurricane Irma on the Treasure Coast and today is the anniversary of 911.  How the world has changed!

9/7/18 Report - Cache of 19th Century Coins Found. Florence Coming Closer Followed by Others.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com.

... The latest historical find was unearthed last week, as crews were building a new recreational trail. The workers stumbled upon a stack of 23 old Canadian and American coins, buried about 30 centimetres below ground.
They're all from the 19th century, and the oldest is dated 1864.

"These are coins that would have been in common circulation during the [Klondike] Gold Rush," said Christian Thomas, special projects archeologist from the Yukon government...

It looks like there will be a lot of storms headed this way.  Maybe they'll veer off or maybe one or two will hit us.

The MagicSeaWeed surf prediction is for waves of seven to eleven feet on Wednesday.  Until then it will be around three to five feet from Sunday until then.

It looks like the tides will be pretty good then too.

9/6/18 Report - Big Surf Predicted for Next Week. Florence Could Cause Problems For the U. S. Coast.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com.

Three More Systems To Watch.
Source: nhc.noaa.gov
After a very quiet summer, there is now a lot of weather in the Atlantic.

The most significant thing to watch right now in my opinion is Florence, which has been wobbling.  For a while she was headed west towards the Bahamas.

The system behind Florence has a 70% chance of becoming a cyclone in the next forty-eight hours.  And then there is another area behind that one to keep an eye on.

It now looks like we could get some big waves next week.

Three to five feet is predicted for this weekend, with seven to eleven feet for next Wednesday.  That could get interesting.  We haven't had waves like that for quite a while.  There is a lot of sand to be moved, but that could do it.

If you are wondering what would cause the high surf, here is how Ventusky shows Florence next Saturday - well north of us, but sending waves our direction.

Notice the other system below that.  There is a lot going on there.

That system is predicted to be near the Dominican Republic the following weekend.

Prediction for Ten Days From Now.

Of course, this is just a prediction, so it might not happen.  But it is worth watching.  We might get some improved beach hunting in the next week or two.

I typed a few paragraphs paragraphs how objects moved on the beach, but lost it somehow.  I'll have to rewrite that to post some time in the near future.

One of Japan’s busiest airports remained closed indefinitely, a day after the strongest typhoon to hit Japan in 25 years flooded a runway, toppled huge cranes, flipped cars on their side, damaged historic shrines and caused at least 11 deaths as it swept across part of Japan’s main island.

Typhoon Jebi came ashore with sustained winds of 160 kilometers (100 miles) per hour, cutting a path of destruction in and around Osaka and nearby cities that bore the brunt of the storm...

In recent months, two 150-ton survival bunkers journeyed by land and sea from a Texas warehouse to the shores of New Zealand, where they’re buried 11 feet underground.

Seven Silicon Valley entrepreneurs have purchased bunkers from Rising S Co. and planted them in New Zealand in the past two years, said Gary Lynch, the manufacturer’s general manager. At the first sign of an apocalypse — nuclear war, a killer germ, a French Revolution-style uprising targeting the 1 percent — the Californians plan to hop on a private jet and hunker down, he said...

9/5/18 Report - Bigger Surf Coming. Gordon Hits Mississippi. Florence Headed Towards Bermuda. Mystery Find Identified.

Written by the TreasureGuide for the exclusive use of treasurebeachesreport.blogspot.com.

Found on Beach by Alberto S.
I often say you can find anything and everything on a beach.  The items shown above were recently found by Alberto S.  Do you know what they are?   I'll tell you later.

Here is how Alberto described this find.

I am attaching a couple of images hoping you may have the time to view and comment. The image with the green capsule - I do not have a clue as to what this is for.  It's about an inch long and inside are a couple of tiny pouches with a silver looking liquid and a small black bead or something like that.  It was a surface find.

---

Brian B. had the following to say about the beaches up in the Flagler area.

... I think you were smart hitting the inland over the year as the sand has been rebuilding since Jan 5 this year in Flagler when the N Easter hit along our coast. 25 million dune restoration has been underway since Feb with a mile a month getting new sand from some 50 miles away and trucked in. While it's white fine sand and does not match the existing it was DEP approved and even though it won't hold together like existing sand, it seems that DEP doesn't care just so it's a sand of their approval. Thanks

---

And DB said, I read the report today and saw you haven't been up north any. Vero and north are all sanded in as well.
---

Thanks for sharing Alberto, Brian and DB!

Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall around Mississippi, and Hurricane Florence is headed towards Bermuda.

Hurricane Florence.

For the Treasure Coast, the one to watch is the undeveloped system behind Florence.  It is still far away.

This weekend the surf will increase.  Here is how MagicSeaWeed shows it

I don't believe we've had four to six feet all summer - at least not sustained for any length of time.  Looks like summer is about over.

---

About the mystery find shown at the top of the page - here it is.

It is a dental amalgam kit containing 600 mg of mercury and 600 mg of alloy.

Here is some information added by Alberto.

There's no secret reason NIST (and partners like the Environmental Protection Agency and United Nations) have pushed scientists away from mercury. It's a neurotoxin—exposure can cause tremors, partial blindness, deafness, memory loss, and many, many other problems—and, if mercury does spill, it's very hard to clean up. But toxicologists have known these facts for ages—what took so long? Inertia, partly. People grew up using mercury thermometers, and damn it, they want to keep using them. But mercury thermometers also have real advantages over the alternatives.

So I went looking for amalgam and found this:

Potential Risks: Dental amalgam contains elemental mercury. It releases low levels of mercury in the form of a vapor that can be inhaled and absorbed by the lungs. ... Based on this evidence, FDA considers dental amalgam fillings safe for adults and children ages 6 and above.Dec 5, 2017

He then wondered, as you might expect, how it ended up on the beach.

---

Concerning mercury, below is what Carla Phillips says in her book Six Galleons for the King of Spain.

... The galleons often carried mercury on the outbound voyages, because it was a crucial part silver refining in the New World.  Once the mercury arrived in Cadiz, special containers had to be built to protect it form dampness, and that could take considerable time.  Altogether, some 198 toneladas would be sent in 1632, both to New Spain and to Tierra Firma for transshipment to Peru.  Although Oquendo was no e too pleased with the extra trouble caused by the mercury, after several years of uncertain fleets the New World mines were desperate for it.  The fleet also carried muskets and harquebuses, gathered from all over Andalusia, for transsihpment to Peru...
