Not long ago I mentioned the Ribault survivor camp near Cape Canaveral.  A 16th century French shipwreck was found near there.

Here is a bit of the WESH news report.

...Just a couple of miles from Jetty Park, a popular swimming beach, divers found canons made of bronze and iron; anchors, crusted with marine growth; and the Fleur de Lis, along with a French coat of arms archaeologists call priceless. And maritime wreckage is around 400 years old.

Finders, working for the company Global Marine Exploration, said they’ve discovered the remains of what appear to be three French ships. The origin of the ships will be difficult to verify, they said.

The ships could be from the French colonial period on the Florida coast, around the year 1560, Global Marine Exploration archaeologist Jim Sinclair said. The ships may have sunk in a hurricane, he said...

When you live with an artifact for a while, it seems to change with you.  It amazes me how after many years an old object can take on new meaning.

Sometimes you run across more information or see pictures or something that relates to the object. Other times it just seems like you just get a new feeling about what it might be or where it came from.  That can happen over a period of many years.  That amazes me sometimes.  I guess it is just everything coming together to lead you to a new idea or perception.

I have mystery items that I haven't positively identified after a period of years and years, but as time goes by I generally tend to get a feeling about what the item most likely is.  I still wait hoping to see something that proves to my satisfaction one way or another, and sometimes that happens, but more often than not, it is a matter of some level of confidence rather than proof.  Nonetheless, the process is fascinating to me.

Karl is a tropical storm once again.  It still doesn't seem to be headed this way though.  Neither is Lisa.

3/19/14 Report - Treasure Coast Gold Find, Nairobi Gaming Chip, & Personal Under Water Drones

Conditions haven't been great for finding old things on the beach so far in 2014.  November of 2013 was the last really good period.  Nonetheless, there are always things to be found.

Here is a nice find by Charlie S, and here is what he said.

I have been reading your blog for a few years now, really enjoy it.  I thought you may enjoy this treasure coast gold find from last week.

This is a 14kp (solid 14 Karat Gold) bracelet that was taken just above the surf line on the incoming tide.  Unfortunately the incoming water made it a tough recovery and it ended up quite mangled, (or may have already been so, no way to know).  This bracelet weighed out at 14.7 grams, which calculated out to $374 in pure gold at spot.

Not too long ago I did a few posts on tokens and casino chips.  Here is a gaming chip that was found on the beach from the Nairobi Casino in Kenya. 

One of the interesting things about Florida and resort areas in general is the finds that come from all over the country and world.

This gaming chip has a silver center and was evidently a recent drop in very nice condition.

The face value of the chip is 10 shillings.




The news is talking about under water drones.  That sounds new and gets attention, but it looks to me like what they are talking about is nothing much different than the ROVs that we are familiar with.  I guess there are some new things about them, but the big difference is in using the word drone.

The Navy is getting into underwater drones in a big way now.  The Pentagon is doubling the amount they are spending on drones that will take over a lot of the work previously done by men.

One company is making underwater drones that individuals can purchase for under $1000.   They have a video camera and come in a kit form.

Looks like fun, but doesn't look very heavy duty to me.  I don't think it would be much good in shallow water where you have currents or a semi-rough surf.

I would think a good submersible video camera that could be attached to a pole, cable or whatever would do just as well.  Of course once you see an object you have to have a way to grab onto it, but I think that can be accomplished simply and inexpensively by other means.

I'm not thinking of going down a mile anyhow.  That makes things much easier.

On the Treasure Coast the surf is supposed to be up a little tomorrow to something around 3 to 5 feet.  That isn't very much but if there was going to be a strong North wind and a good angle to the waves, it might accomplish a little.  As it is, the angles don't look all that good.

The predictions do provide a hint of a bigger surf in the near future.

12/6/13 Report - Civil War Sword, Drones for Detectorists and Big Surf Coming

Dug Civil War Sword

Two topics were on my mind this morning - Pearl Harbor Day (Sat.) and swords.   It is obvious why the first came to mind, but I don't know why swords came to mind.

I guess I was remembering a sword found on the beach just south of the walk-way at Turtle Trail quite a number of years ago.  Sometimes things just come to mind.  Anyhow, one thing leads to another.

It isn't always seasoned wisdom or tons of effort that results in remarkable finds.  Sometimes it is accident, good luck, or maybe even the unseen power behind the fickle finger of fate.  In any case, youth and novices have made more than their fare share of remarkable finds.

The Civil War sword shown above was found by a first grader in 2010.  It was originally reported in the now defunct Clarke Daily News.

Pretty neat how this boy got interested in finding Civil War items.   Nice story!


Did you ever want to know what the beach is doing a few hundred yards up ahead around the bend but not feel like making the walk?  With all of the talk about drones these days, wouldn't it be nice to send one up along the beach with a camera?   Or across the river?   It could save a lot of driving or walking.

That goes right along with one of my other ideas of building a frame that has a number of detector coils mounted on it that you could pull behind a vehicle.   The signal would cause a spray can to spray a spot where the target was detected.   You could cover a lot of ground that way.  What do they say about idle minds?

On a more serious note, did you see the 11 foot seas predicted for next Friday.

Predicted Surf For the Near Future

From past experience, I'd say there is a slim chance that we'll actually get an eleven foot surf, but I guess there is some chance.  And if it does happen, that is enough that it would probably produce much improved detecting conditions.

We'll just have to wait and see if it really happens.


The poll only has about 60% of the number of respondents that I'd like to get for the newest blog poll.   A lot of people have turned their attention to Christmas shopping and the like.

I've already gleaned one piece of good information from the blog, but need to wait for more responses to make sure.   I appreciate your responses.
