Yesterday I mentioned some rare double mint mark coins found on the SS Central America wreck site.
Here is a nice web site that lists and describes various types of coin errors that can be of value.

If you check your coin finds carefully you might find some error coins of your own.
Here are a few I've found.
Can you see anything wrong with this penny? Look closely. It is small.

| Rim Burr Strike Through |
Above the "STATES" is a depression apparently created by a burr from the rim being on the planchet when the planchet was struck by the die resulting in an impression having the shape of the debris on the face of the coin.
This is not a valuable error, but it is a mint error coin.
Here is a more obvious one. The experts tell me that it is a strike through.
It can be difficult for a novice like myself to tell the difference between a mint error and post mint damage, but I've learned some of the signs. It often takes a very close microscopic view.
With post mint damage, like with scratches or other things, you can usually see how the metal is pushed or moved.
Again, this mint error is not a real valuable one.
My best mint error find was a large die crack that goes half way across the coin.
Searching for mint errors on found coins adds another level to coin shooting.

| Recent Junk Find. |
I found this the last time I went detecting. It turned out to be a junker, but it is the type of thing that when you get your first partial glimpse, might get you excited.
Once again,the location was a good predictor that it would be junk.
